What does the Church do with the Scriptures?

The Church reads (Psalm 119:11-12), studies (2 Timothy 3:16-17), applies (James 1:22), prays (Acts 4:24-26), teaches & preaches (2 Timothy 4:2) the Scriptures (also called the Bible). According to our mission statement we “Honour & Obey” the Scriptures, as the written, infallible and inerrant Word of God.

What is the Word of God?

The Scriptures record that Jesus held them as the Word of God. He upheld their authority (Matthew 5:18, Matthew 4:4), attributed their words to God Himself (Matthew 19:4), and He lived & died to fulfil them (Matthew 26:54).

The Scriptures twice call Jesus the Word of God. He is God in the flesh. His words are God’s words. The Scriptures don’t just contain the Word of God, and are not just a witness to the Word of God. Both Jesus and the Scriptures, are the Word of God. Jesus teaches that believing the written Word of God, is a prerequisite to believing Him (John 5:46-47).

What Authority do the Scriptures have?

According to the Scriptures (2 Peter 1:20-21), they were recorded by God’s Prophets and Apostles through the inspiration of God’s Holy Spirit, so that they wrote what He wanted. Although the reader of Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit, the authority of Scripture comes from the fact that the Holy Spirit inspired it’s authors (2 Tim 3:16).
