The Grand Entrance
After the disciples watched Jesus ascend into heaven, they went to Jerusalem and waited. And it was worth the wait. One Pentecost, a Jewish festival, God sent the Holy Spirit to empower the disciples to build the church. The event is extra-ordinary and the impact has been felt through the ages and is in effect in our lives right now. Today we learn the significance of the events at Pentecost, and what it means for us today.
Scripture
Acts 2:1-13 ESV When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. (2) And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. (3) And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (5) Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. (6) And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. (7) And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? (8) And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? (9) Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, (10) Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, (11) both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” (12) And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” (13) But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

We’re better together
Acts 2, verse 1 says that the disciples are together when the Holy Spirit came upon them. We see great acts of God with His people when they are together. Do you think God works better with us as individuals, or as a community? Why would you say that?

God in the wind
The scripture says that the entire house was filled with the sound of a mighty wind from heaven. Why do you think it was only the sound of the wind, and what is the significance of the wind?
Acts 2:2 ESV And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Genesis 3:8 ESV And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

God in the fire

Filled with the Holy Spirit
Verse 4 says that after the Holy Spirit rested on each one of them, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. But earlier in the Gospel accounts, we see Jesus breathing on them, and them receiving the Holy Spirit. How can we reconcile these two fillings of the Holy Spirit?
Acts 2:4 ESV And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
John 20:21-22 ESV Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” (22) And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
John 7:39 ESV Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Evidence for the empowerment?
Also in verse 4, we learn that once they were filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples began speaking in tongues. And this is similar to what we see elsewhere in scripture, where new believers who received the Holy Spirit begin speaking in tongues. Do you think this means that everyone who is baptised in the Holy Spirit speaks in tongues?
Acts 2:4 ESV And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Speaking in tongues
Verses 4 and 8 indicate that the disciples were speaking in tongues, meaning in this case, that the multitude gathered in Jerusalem were hearing the gospel in their own language. Do you think this speaking in tongues is the same gift of tongues Paul speaks about later? Why or why not?

Our response
In verses 11 and 12, we see the two classic responses from the multitude when we are confronted with the miracles of God. We either explain it away or we ask ourselves, what does it mean? The latter, is the right thing to do… So, what does this all mean to you?
Acts 2:12-13 ESV And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” (13) But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
