The beauty of Baptism

Baptism shows us what God has already done for us. When we are Baptised we declare to the world what He’s already done. It is rich in symbolism and the perfect demonstration of the righteousness and mercy of God almighty. The Apostle Peter draws a comparison to the flood of Noah to bring out all of this rich meaning.

Scripture

1 Peter 3:18-22 ESV  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,  [19]  in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,  [20]  because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.  [21]  Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,  [22]  who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Bible Study Questions

The preciousness of God’s Grace

The Apostle Peter writes about the Gospel, Judgement and the Grace of Jesus Christ. In his letters he focuses on grace, why do you think Peter is so focused on grace? What was his experience?

Luke 22:31-32 ESV  “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,  [32]  but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

John 21:17-19 ESV  He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.  [18]  Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.”  [19]  (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

The purity and perfection of Jesus Christ

God punishes sin and cannot just ignore it because He is the perfect and just judge of all creation. How dis He punish the sins of those who have faith in Him? Why was Jesus able to take our punishment?

1 Peter 3:18 ESV  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous,

Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV  Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  [15]  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  [16]  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 9:26-28 ESV  for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.  [27]  And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,  [28]  so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

The plan of God

Jesus died to reconcile us to God, why did He have to die to reconcile us? Why do you and I need to be reconciled to God?

1 Peter 3:18 ESV …that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

Romans 3:21-24 ESV  But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—  [22]  the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:  [23]  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  [24]  and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Isaiah 53:6 ESV  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Colossians 1:19-23 ESV  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,  [20]  and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.  [21]  And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,  [22]  he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,  [23]  if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

The patience of God

Why does it seem that God doesn’t act against evil, why does He take so long? Why should we be grateful for this?

1 Peter 3:19-20 ESV  in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,  [20]  because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared,

2 Peter 3:4-9 ESV  They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”  [5]  For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,  [6]  and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.  [7]  But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.  [8]  But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  [9]  The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

The punishment of God

The flood waters destroyed all life, but also raised the ark above all the destruction. God saved Noah and His family from the flood waters. He saves us from the enemy, from ourselves and from the wickedness of humankind. He saves us from all these things, but what is the most crucial thing He saves us from?

1 Peter 3:20 ESV …in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

Genesis 7:15-16 ESV  They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life.  [16]  And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.

Hebrews 11:7 ESV  By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,  [9]  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The purpose of Baptism

There are those that teach that Baptism saves us. Does this verse support that or does it make the opposite clear? How can we be sure that we are saved by faith alone and not by any ritual?

1 Peter 3:21 ESV  Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Acts 2:36-39 ESV  Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”  [37]  Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”  [38]  And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  [39]  For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”

The permanence and power of Jesus Christ

Salvation is promised to those who believe. Jesus died and was raised to life to show us that His sacrifice was effective. How can we know to trust Him in all things now and forever?

1 Peter 3:22 ESV  who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

John 14:1-6 ESV  “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.  [2]  In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?  [3]  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.  [4]  And you know the way to where I am going.”  [5]  Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”  [6]  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
